REJECTION

I was so inspired to listen to the story of novelist Matthew Quick on WZID radio while driving to work this morning.

I’m attaching a link below with his bio.   Particularly inspiring to me was listening him talk about how he was rejected 71 times by literary agents before the 72nd one accepted him ! He had spent three years isolated in his basement and was pretty much down to his last dollar when he finished writing Silver Lining Playbook.   It is currently nominated for 8 Oscars. 

As an artist I find rejection particulary hard.  It helps me to listen to and read about what  others go through in order to get their story ‘heard’ or their painting ‘seen’.  I suffered lots of rejections from Juried shows for several years…  but I’m glad I didn’t quit submitting work.  Last year I was accepted into four juried shows ! Of course it’s a wonderful feeling, but just recently (last month) I was again rejected by a larger juried show and again felt the waves of “you’re not good enough”.  

I realize it’s going to be a fickle journey and I am determined never to quit.  I am so passionately head of heels in love with the creative process of art and the rewards I feel each time I produce a new piece are amazing.  I can’t imagine what it must have felt like to be rejected 71 times ! I have a new perspective today !! J Thank you so much Matthew Quick and many congratulations ! J

    I was rejected from two juried shows recently, but I had 3 pieces accepted in another juried show earlier. You just never know what is going to please the judge. Never give up!

    Hi Marilyn, thank you so much !!! I feel so privileged to be on this wonderful art journey and each step is a learning process for me and I find value in all of my struggles. On the heels of the last rejection, I just sold two pieces, Urban Rumble and City Moons (two of the pieces that were rejected in the juried show 😉 I agree with you and will never stop doing what i love !! I just visited your Fineart America store and just LOVE your work !!! 🙂 Warmly, Jacqui 🙂

      Thanks, Jacqui! So glad you sold those…I really like Urban Rumble! It is always finding the right person who wants the piece. I had all three pieces juried in to one show, and all three diferent pieces rejected in another show by the same juror. Different day, different mood, I guess! Your work is wonderful…keep it up. BTW,I was in Scotland years ago, and I just loved it. It was idyllic and so peaceful. I can imagine that it is a wonderful place to paint. Hugs, Marilyn
